Percent of Change Chart

Using the information you already have regarding the cost of specific items in the ‘50s, ‘60s,’70s,’80s, and ‘90s, you are to make and complete a chart. The following example should help you.

This is a sample of information you already have:

The Cost of a Gallon of milk.

 1958
1968
1978
1988
1998
 .50
.60
.75
1.50
2.10

Your percent of change chart will be completed using your computations from the percent of change from decade to decade.

Percent of change in a gallon of milk.

1958-1968
1968-1978
1978-1988
1988-1998
20%
25%
100%
40%

These percentages are figured as you learned in class. For example, from 1958-1968, you must first subtract .60-.50=.10. You then make a proportion as follows:

% of Change    =     Amount of Change
     100                    Original Amount

For the 1958-1968 example, it would be:
  %    =    .10
100          .50

Solve the proportion to obtain 20%. This must be done for all three items you researched so your final chart will look like this:

1968-1968
1968-1978
1978-1988
1988-1998
1. Gallon of Milk

25%
100%

2. Gallon of Gas
5%
10%
200%
45%
3. McDonald's Hamburger
20%
30%
50%
- 20%

Your percent of change may be a percent of decrease if the price declined form one decade to the next. If so, indicate this by a negative sign in front of your percentage. All percentages are to be rounded to the nearest whole %.

Your final chart may be done on a computer if you like or it may be done neatly by hand.
